Before the year 1440 if you needed printing done it was a major issue if you needed brochures, flyers even business cards (I wondered if they used them back then) it was a big job as it was all done by hand. Imagine asking the local expert for a rush job of 500 Flyers for your tavern advertising the happy Hour Wild Boar Special this Coming Friday! Maybe you would be lucky to get those done in a few weeks.
Then along comes the new wonder of Technology the Gutenberg press, do you think that may have been a little faster? Well, the operators had to put type together by hand, and a skilled compositor could assemble 2,000 characters or letters in an hour. A computer can arrange the same number of characters in about two seconds. Today, more words are being printed every second than were printed every year during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
What changed? Well as technology evolved, inventors adapted these modern technologies to revolutionize printing. Steam engines and, later, electrical engines were incorporated into the design of printing presses. In the 1970s, computers were integrated into the printing process and that was the big change and suddenly, The Local tavern went from waiting a few weeks for the colourful brochures for a couple of days.
